Welcome to OBA – 2018 (Jan 22, 2018)

SJBHS students who are about to write the ICSE and ISC exams are welcomed into the OBA every year. Roshan Paul (1976), a distinguished alumnus, was the guest of honour. Roshan was captain of the school Cricket team and went on to graduate from Davidson College and Harvard University. Roshan spoke about the importance of perseverance, and not being deterred by failures.

Citing his own example of being unable to pursue the path of Cricket, Roshan has made remarkable contributions in the field of Education. Roshan spoke of the value of team work and the well-rounded Josephite education. George Ollapally, President, OBA and Rev Fr Clifford Sequeira, Principal, SJBHS spoke about the charter of the OBA. The members of the OBA MC greeted the students and accompanied them for lunch after the mementoes were handed out. The OBA wishes the students the very best as they embark on their career paths.

Prestige SJBHS OBA Golf Tournament (Jan 20, 2018)

The third Prestige SJBHS OBA Golf tournament held on Saturday January 20, 2018 was a Centenary Special event. The team of volunteers decided to change the customary morning event to an afternoon one, ending with live music, cocktails and dinner. About 95 Josephites spanning 1963 to 2007 registered. After a light brunch, group photo, school song and tournament briefing, the shot gun start at 12 noon signalled serious golf, on one of India's best golf courses.

Five hours later it was over, thirsty players adjourned for excellent Geist craft beer, (thanks Narayan, Mohan and Paul). Live music with Ajit Nambiar and his band followed, with an enthusiastic and appreciative audience loving every moment. The prize distribution with Fr Clifford Sequeira and Irfan Razack presenting numerous trophies followed. David D'Souza was the open category winner, Gen Bala Thambiah the seniors’ winner, with St Patrick's House and Class of 1988 winning the two rolling trophies. This was followed by an auction of memorabilia. Finally, dinner and cocktails with DJ Praful, with about 150 Josephites and spouses partying late into the night.

The bar has been raised very high in terms of organization, hospitality, participation and fellowship. It's going to be a challenging act to follow. On behalf of the OBA and all participants, a big thank you to the Prestige Group, all our generous sponsors for supporting us, and our team of dedicated volunteers who put in months of work in making this wonderful event a reality.

OBA Christmas Dinner (Dec 9, 2017)

The evening of Saturday, December 9, 2017 was cool, with a typical Bangalore winter feeling. The participation turned out to be the largest ever, with over 250 guests including many happy children. The star of the evening was Old Boy Sanjay Xavier dressed as Santa Claus, rather busy chatting and singing along with the children, and handing out gifts. Nosa Goa was responsible for the Dinner, they served up an excellent meal with coastal flavours. Mike Kerr and band provided foot stomping music that kept the audience on their toes till late into the night.

The prizes for the Inter Batch Football Tournament were handed out to the winning teams by teachers Shivaprakash and Uday Kumar. The Class of 1999 won the pre-2000 tournament with Class of 1992 in second place. The Class of 2012 won the post-2000 tournament with the Class of 2007 in second place.

The OBA thanks Josephites, families, guests and our respected teachers for participating in true Josephite spirit. A big thank you to the OBA Sub-committee for their dedicated support!

Josephite Sporting Excellence Celebratory Lunch – JOSEXCEL (Dec 2, 2017)

The second edition of the Josephite Sporting Excellence Celebratory Lunch (JOSEXCEL) represents the pride that the OBA takes in acknowledging the sporting achievements of Josephites. The strong tradition of sports and games has moulded the character of Josephites over decades. The OBA has instituted the Joseph Ollapally Celebratory Lunch to honour sportsmen who have represented our country at various forums in India and overseas. In addition, the OBA recognizes students of Std 10 and Std 12 who have represented SJBHS in several disciplines. Acknowledging the role played by parents, the OBA recognizes and conveys our gratitude for their support as students delicately balance the rigours of academics and sports.

The OBA had the privilege of honouring Anil Aldrin (Hockey), Austin Almeida (Basketball), Capt Philip A Beck (Athletics), H Habibulla (Swimming), Maj Gen M N Devaya (Sailing), Rahul Dravid (Cricket), Sandeep Somesh (Hockey) and Srinivas Prasad (Cricket). In addition, the OBA honoured Arvind Mani (2012) with the ‘Young Sportsman of the Year’ award and a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh to encourage him to pursue a Swimming career.

Inter Batch Football Tournament (Dec 2-3, 2017)

The Inter Batch Football Tournament has become a huge magnet that brings the younger Old Boys back to school. The driving force is the desire to play alongside batchmates they used to play with during their school days, on the same grounds. The Football Sub-committee worked hard for months to plan and execute the tournament, now in its third year.

There seemed to be a potential dampener, though. The rains had extended to well past the usual rainy season, and it had rained even on the day before the tournament. The playground was wet on Saturday morning. However, teams of Old Boys led by coach Shivaprakash ensures that the playing conditions were set right for the tournament to begin on time and to ensure an injury free tournament. The sun shone bright later in the day, and the stage was set for the largest “young” Old Boy get together of the year. The food trucks proved to be a big hit among the participants.

Twenty-four teams participated, divided in the pre-2000 and post-2000 groups. In the pre-2000 group, 1992 and 1999 were the finalists, which 1999 won. In the post-2000 group, 2007 and 2012 were the finalists, which 2012 won. Coach Shivaprakash was the referee for the finals, played under floodlights. Technology was leveraged, with the drawing of lots and the finals being streamed live on Facebook

The OBA thanks sponsors for their valuable support. Big thanks to the OBA Sub-committee, players and supporters for turning up in large numbers on both days. Hearty congratulations to the winners and batch mates who cheered the players.

Narayan Manepally, Paul Chowdhury, Mohan Alapatt – The Geist Trio (1979)

In 2003, Narayan Manepally and Paul Chowdhury returned to India after long stints abroad as systems and design engineers. Their chance interaction at their 25th anniversary OBA reunion led to discovering a common interest in producing craft beer. Mohan Alapatt, a fellow classmate, joined them in 2013 and the trio then set out to change the course of India’s craft beer scene by setting up South India’s first distribution craft brewery in Bangalore to produce world-class, handcrafted beers on tap. Today, Geist beer is available on tap in over 40 locations across Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore. Geist Witty Wit (a Belgian style Witbier), Geist Weiss Guy (a German Weissbier) and Geist Uncle Dunkel (a German dark wheat beer) and as Geist Kamacitra (a New England India Pale Ale).

Paul

Mohan
Narayan Manepally, an Electrical Engineer by profession, developed a passion for brewing during his time in the US, where he worked with the Intel Corporation in Oregon. Oregon is the Mecca of craft beer in the US and Narayan, like many others in Oregon, got bitten by the craft beer bug. He setup a home brewing system in his garage, experimented with multiple styles of beer and after his experiments produced pretty good beer and did not kill anybody, he decided to take this back to India and introduce craft beer to India. After returning to India in 2003, he took over the family business in auto components, while pursuing his passion in craft beer in parallel. In 2006, he became a ‘beer-prenuer’ when he co-founded Beerworks Restaurants & Microbrewery Pvt. Ltd. along with Paul.

Paul Chowdhury, is half German, half Indian and full time Hippie. An Industrial Engineer by profession, he worked in the US for many years at Motorola, Solectron, VA Linux and a host of other high-tech companies. Paul decided to return to India in 2002 to be closer to his roots and follow his passion for travel. A chance encounter with Narayan got him involved in the craft beer business. Paul is involved with the craft beer brewing process and equipment design and was instrumental in setting up the two brewpubs (Brewsky and Big Brewsky) and the new production craft brewery in Hoskote.

Mohan Alapatt, a Mechanical Engineer by qualification, says he never worked a day as an Engineer. He worked in various capacities across several Indian corporations such as Tata Chemicals, Titan, Tanishq and Reliance. Mohan was also an Entrepreneur when he along with colleagues from Tanishq co-founded OyzterBay, an online jewellery play, which was eventually sold to Fossil. His final stint in the corporate world was with Reliance Retail as Business Head for Reliance Jewels. Today Mohan is the COO of the company and his obsession with MS Excel is as great as ever, while he mulls over every detail of the business.

Sandeep Reddy (1987)

Sandeep Reddy (1987) has been the Chief Financial Officer of Guess Inc. since 2013 and is currently based in Los Angeles in the USA. Guess is a global lifestyle fashion brand with distribution in almost 100 countries, revenues of roughly $2.3 Billion or Rs 15,000 crores, and almost 14,000 employees worldwide. Since leaving India in 1994 and over his career so far Sandeep has lived in different parts of the world including the UK, Italy, France and Switzerland with his wife Kavita but the connection to India and Bangalore remains as strong as ever.

After passing out of SJBHS, Sandeep earned a BA (Hon) Economics from Shri Ram College in Delhi, an MBA from Cornell University, USA and he is now a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

In his final year at school Sandeep was the captain of St. Georges house as well as captain of the school senior cricket team. His happiest memories from school are as a cricketer when he was a member of the school cricket team that won the Cottonian Shield, followed by the Aryabhatta tournament where he had the privilege to be the team-mate of Rahul Dravid. The lessons he learned from his teachers and friends at school and team-mates on the cricket field have been a big influence on his professional career and life since he finished school in 1987. The passage of time makes him even more proud to be a Josephite and thankful for his good fortune to be one.

Josephites are giving back

SJBHS OBA is driven strongly by their passion to ‘give back’ to their Alma Mater. The OBA has, for the past two decades and more, championed several causes to support students and teachers.

1. Academic scholarships
2. Academic prizes
3. Sports scholarships
4. Mid-day meal programme
5. Medical insurance for teachers and families
6. Teachers’ training programme
7. OBA Buzz

The OBA sincerely thanks Josephites who have donated generously – individually and through their batches.

OBA Riders

The Riders group of the OBA went on a unique ‘foodie’ ride to savour the flavours of food in Tamil Nadu. Riding several hundred kilometres for lunch is an interesting initiative, indeed!

‘CS’ Tips on Skin and Hair care

Skin
1. Compulsory Shower: Bathe daily, evening better than morning, although a morning shower to freshen up is good.
2. Comfortable & Swift bathing routine (long and hot baths dry the skin).
3. Careful Soaping with the use of a mild soap; in dry weather and when skin is less sweaty, soaping of folds daily is sufficient, entire body every other day.
4. Cream the Skin immediately after bathing, and this moisturizing, if needed, at the end of day as well (cream better than lotion).
5. Cotton Supreme for clothing, which is to be loose fitting.
6. Cut or Shave hair in underarm and pubic areas to maintain better hygiene.

Hair
1. Daily Cleansing Schedule with water if hair is kept short and for those who exercise regularly.
2. Controlled Shampoo use, it has to be mild (further diluted 1: 2 or 1: 3 with water), apply gently to scalp and leave for a couple of minutes before rinsing off.
3. Curtail Synthetics: Minimise use of hair care products, gels, oils, hair cream, wax, conditioner, serum and the like.
4. Curb Scalp massage, vigorous combing or brushing.
5. Consume Selective and healthy food for a glowing skin and lustrous hair.
