Bringing back the Fr Eric Vaz Memorial Hockey Shield – from Mr and Mrs Muthappa (parents)

The Tournament for Seniors and the Fr. Eric Vaz Memorial Tournament for Juniors are hosted in July every year. This year seven schools competed. The boys, under the able guidance of their coaches, worked hard to bring themselves to top shape. Fitness as well as daily rigorous practice was the norm leading up to the tournament.

The OBA thoughtfully made arrangements for a healthy and nutritious breakfast for the Senior and Junior teams every morning after practice. Hard work boosted the boys to bring out their best throughout the tournament. The Juniors won the Fr Eric Vaz Memorial Tournament with a thumping 4-1 win. The trophy came back to school after a gap of 2 years. The Senior team narrowly lost on penalties in the Final. Keeping the grand tradition of Hockey alive has been a superb achievement. Congratulations to the coaches and the teams. The OBA and parents are proud of them!

Old Boys in the News
Keegan Moras (Batch of 2001) – Following his heart!

Imagine travelling to an exotic location where you can scuba dive, snorkel, sail, raft and indulge in many more unconventional sports. Keegan is a sports aficionado who has converted his zeal for adventure into a business. Co-founder of Sportsphere India, he gives travellers an opportunity to take up a niche sport and live life on the edge during their travels. Keegan’s venture took off in early 2014. If you are into rock climbing, equestrian sport, hot air ballooning, sea walking, para-gliding among other rare sports, then he is the man you should connect with.

“Adventure sport and meaningful travel excite me. We have covered places like Goa, Andaman, Konkan coast, Gulf of Mannar, Mexico and Sri Lanka, among others. There will be ups and downs, but it is ‘your’ own journey to cherish. Storms keep blowing — you will always hear the odd voices who do not understand your chosen path. Unshakeable faith is the magic ingredient. Stay true to your calling and true to yourself – all else will follow. As they say in Costa Rica “Pura Vida” which translates to ‘Pure Life’ — this is a guideline that I strive to live by.”

Vivek George (Batch of 2004) – A spark in School was the beginning of a business venture!

Vivek George's entrepreneurial journey started way back during his school days. As class representative, Vivek took on the responsibility of getting t-shirts made for his class and then, for several classes. A tiny spark is often the beginning of a fire that becomes the catalyst lighting the way ahead. Vivek has come a long way since then. Realizing the potential business opportunities in the customized t-shirt printing industry, Vivek founded Your Design, a venture that currently employs about 20 people and specializes in fulfilling large, corporate orders.
The path has not been easy for Vivek and he has seen ups and downs. His parents were initially not supportive, preferring him to pursue a traditional and safer profession like Engineering or Medicine. However, Vivek persisted and had to learn the intricacies of the textile industry as well as how to conduct business along the way. He did listen to family advice, however, and earned a MBA degree from Christ University, a decision he was glad that he took.

Besides his business venture, Vivek invests considerable time and effort into the world of fitness. Vivek’s fitness regime has earned him a fitness instructor job with a premium gym in the city. He is a certified RPM instructor and trains people to live a healthier and fitter life through his own story of fitness and health food. Vivek works 6 days a week for 6 months, and spends the other 6 months travelling and exploring the world.

After 10,000 km: This Is Just The Beginning Of The Journey By Sajju Jain (Batch of 1992) - @sajjujain

The Small and Medium Enterprise industry segment (SME) is India’s largest job creator, accounting for about 80% of our countrywide employment. Given the large base, supporting traditional entrepreneurship in India is the only way to facilitate the creation of 12 to 15 million jobs that India needs to, each year. New job creation is the single biggest challenge facing our generation in our dream of making India a prosperous nation by effectively utilizing our demographic dividend.

On 18th June 2016, my team and I left Bangalore for Kanyakumari. We had planned to set off on a road trip across India. Our mission was to create awareness of a funding competition that we had created. This is the first of its kind for SMEs. Over the next 42 days we drove over 10,000 km, covered 20 cities and connected with several hundred people, from Kanyakumari to way up north. While this journey was an amazing learning experience, the key insights we gained are as follows:

• We have barely tapped the economic potential of India, for which we need a new game with new rules where the definition of value, cost and profit and other parameters need to be rewritten.
• India needs to nurture global-scale companies for efficient execution of large nation-building projects in which SMEs play a critical role in providing social stability and sustainable socio-economic development through distribution of financial opportunity.
• The task of transforming India’s antiquated SME business models needs to focus on the three elements of Standardization, Professionalism and Invention (not Innovation) in order to create maximum impact.
The road ahead is long and the scale of challenges at times frightening. Whenever I need to stand back up after a fall, I remember… FAITH and TOIL.

Realize Your Full Potential
By Prakash Narayan (Batch of 1975) - @kpn320

What is the one common thing between Aristotle, Bill Gates and Harry Potter? The answer is that all of them have or had great mentors. Plato was Aristotle’s mentor, Warren Buffet is Bill Gates’ mentor and Prof. Dumbledore is Harry Potter’s mentor. No matter what stage you are in your career, a mentor will help you realize your full potential. A mentor can help you navigate the tough choices that you face.

We are already born with every gift that we need to succeed. However, our skill sets are time- bound. We need to constantly reinvent ourselves in order to leverage constantly emerging opportunities. With the right mentor, their hindsight becomes your 20-20. Since they have “been there and done that”, they can help you avoid make costly mistakes. In a sense, they provide you a “forward-view mirror” and provide a perspective of what to expect ahead.

So, how do you go about seeking mentors or becoming a mentor? The OBA network is an excellent place to start. The benefit of such a network is the common passion for our School. Each of us has walked the same corridors – even if we may be separated by many years. I encourage you to seek out old students at the next OBA or School event. You also have the opportunity to leverage a structured programme by visiting the “Mentoring” tab on the OBA web site http://sjbhsoba.net/

Know Your House
St Andrew

St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, Greece, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Barbados. Andrew was born in Bethsaida (now Israel), and was a fisherman before he became Christ's first disciple, and with his brother Simon Peter became two of the 12 disciples. He was crucified by the Romans on an X-shaped cross on 30 November, 60AD at Patras in Greece where he had travelled to preach. The Saltire, or St Andrew’s Cross, was adopted as the national emblem and flag of the Scots. St Andrew preached as far as the Black Sea.

St David

St David’s Day is the feast day of St David, the patron saint of Wales. It falls on the first day of March, chosen to remember the death of St David. Tradition holds that he died on that day in the year 601. St David was born towards the end of the 5th century in the royal house of Ceredigion. He founded a Celtic monastic community at Glyn Rhosyn in Wales, where the St David’s Cathedral stands today. St David was recognised as a national patron saint at the height of Welsh resistance to the Normans.

St George

St George was born in the 3rd century in the Syrian region. He was a Roman military officer who was killed for refusing to give up his faith. He later became one of the most venerated saints in Christianity. His memorial, St George's Day, is traditionally celebrated on 23rd April. Besides England, numerous countries in Asia, Europe, Middle East, cities, professions and organizations recognize Saint George as their patron. St George's Day was a major feast and national holiday in England on par with Christmas till about 300 years ago.

St Patrick

St Patrick was a 5th century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the patron saint of Ireland. When he was about 16 he was captured by Irish pirates from Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland. He escaped after 6 years and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he served as a Bishop in Ireland. St Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, which is said to be the date of his death, celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday.

Did you Know?
A very brief history of SJBHS

SJBHS was founded as St. Joseph’s College in 1858 by the Missions Etrangeres de Paris, situated at St John's Hill (where St Germain High School now stands), consisting of an orphanage and school. In 1898, 100 boarders and 89 day scholars moved to the current location. The school was renamed as St Joseph’s European High School in 1910. By 1913 the school had grown to 239 boarders and 183 day scholars and two new blocks were added. SJBHS has been managed by the Jesuits since 1937.

Construction of the new school building took place from 2001 to 2007, retaining the heritage like the Roman Catholic chapel, the refectory, and the priests' residence.
The new buildings were ready for the Sesquicentennial Celebrations held in 2008. The year 2007 included another milestone when girls were admitted to Class XI (ISC) for the first time. A significant change over the years has been the closing of the in-school boarding which consisted of 3 dormitories on the upper floor for close to 90 years.

House trivia – extract from an article written by late Rev Fr Simon Furtado
(Note: Rev Fr Lambert was Principal during 1938-39)

Father Lambert, an English Jesuit, who had been chlorine gassed during World War One, sub-divided the four Houses, only in the Boarding school, into More, Kostka, Fisher, Gonzaga, Ogilvie, Berchmans, Southwell and Tarcicius.
